Gillian Lane-PlesciaBorn and educated in Southern EnglandFaculty member at The Julliard SchoolDialect Coach in the New York and Regional TheatresGillian Lane-Plescia, a native of England, is best known for her series of dialect CDs for actors, which are used worldwide. She began teaching Voice, Speech, Dialect and Text in the academic theatre in the 70s, but has spent the last 20 years primarily in professional theatre. Because her background is in voice for the theatre, her approach to dialect work is organic rather than academic. She believes that dialects need to become like a second language, which an actor can use not only within the text of the play but also in spontaneous conversation. Her training in international phonetics helped her to refine her own ear, and she wishes that a thorough grounding in this were an integral part of all actor training. Meanwhile, she encourages actors to listen to and imitate authentic recordings, accustom themselves to the way different dialects feel in the mouth and body , develop their own notation system, and talk to themselves and even go shopping in the dialect.
