Just as physical training allows people to achieve and maintain strength and flexibility in their bodies, Neurofeedback allows us to improve strength and flexibility in our brains Overview of Neurofeedback How is NeuroFeedback Performed? An assessment of brainwave patterns or brain regulation is generally done prior to begining the Neurofeedback training. The information from this assessment is combined with a variety of other information gained from interviews, paper and pencil tests, and/or computer based tests. A treatment plan is generated based on all the information gathered. Brainwave activity is measured with an electroencephalograph (EEG). The EEG biofeedback equipment is connected to the individual with sensors that are placed on the scalp and ears. A computer then analyzes the brain waves. The persons brainwave activity can be observed on a computer monitor. The feedback can take the form of music, varied tones, animations and video game like displays. Uses of NeuroFeedback Neurofeedback has been used for a variety of conditions The most common uses of neurofeedback include ADD/ADHD DepressionAnxiety Seizure Control Tourette Syndrome Addiction Recovery Other Uses of Neurofeedback Brain Injury Chronic Pain Peak PerformanceReactive Attachment Disorder Migraine Learning Disorders Sleep DisordersThe Entropy Design Packages The entropy design package includes designs that use nonlinear and nonparametric measures of the EEG These designs use spectral entropy and interquartile/interquantile range as the values to be trained. Although these designs use different measures they have a similar effect on the eeg. The Entropy design packages include 2 and 4 channel designs and are PhotoStim Capable. More information and images. Interquartile and Interquantile Ranges Non-parametric measures of variability. These measures are useful in Neurofeedback for several reasons They are: 1) not sensitive to extreme or outlying values 2) a robust measure of variability in open ended distributions 3) ideal for use with skewed distributions The interquartile range is calculated by finding the difference between the 75th percentile and the 25th percentile. The range can be calculated for the total spectrum or for subsets of the spectrum. Entropy and EEG The entropy formula Entropy measures the spontaneous dispersal of energy: how much energy is spread out in a process, or how widely spread out it becomes A data set with high entropy has a broad distribution. A data set with low entropy has a narrow or peaked distribution. EEG entropy was first utilized in anesthesia research as a measure of loss of consciousness. As a person loses consciousness the level of cortical entropy decreases. As a person regains consciousness the level of entropy increases. A higher level of consciousness is related to an increased number of cortical microstates. A brain with high entropy value has more available cortical microstates. High Entropy = Awake brain => ‘Freedom’Low Entropy = Comatose brain => ‘Prison’ website: http://northstarneurofeedback.net/page8/page12/page12.htmlwebsite: http://northstarneurofeedback.net/page8/page13/page13.html
